- the true story of hansel & gretel by louise murphy - murphy takes a few liberties with the story & sets it during WWII where hansel & gretel are the pseudonyms assumed by two jewish children whose father must abandon them in order to save them from the nazis. i read this book a few years ago & i remember that it was really interesting & a lot better than i had anticipated.
